1997年的风机力市场上出现了兼具无齿轮、变速变浆距等特征的风力机, 这些高产能、运行维护成本低的先进机型有E-33、E-48、E-70等型号,容量从330kW至2MW,由德国 ENERCON GmbH公司制造,它们的制造始于1992年[4]。2000年瑞典ABB公司研制成功了3MW的巨型可变速风力发电机组,其中包括永磁式转子结构的高压风力发电机Windformer,容量3MW、高约70m、风扇直径约90m[5,6]。2003年在Okinawa电力公司开始运行的MWT-S2000型风力机是日本三菱重工首度完全自行制造的2MW级风机,采用小尺寸的变速无齿轮永磁同步电机,新型轻质叶片[12]。下表为部分风力机制造商所申请的直驱式风力机的相关专利:
